Forecasters are warning residents of South Florida as the first outer bands of Hurricane Matthew approach the coast at Category 4 strength. As it pummels the Bahamas this morning, Matthew is expected to be the strongest storm in the Caribbean in nearly a decade, expected to cause catastrophic damage to property and “immense human suffering”.

The storm is tracking westward closer to Florida’s Atlantic coast, threatens some 9 million people and billions in property value. At this time it is expected to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday between Fort Lauderdale and Fort Pierce. Additionally,  millions have been ordered to evacuate in Georgia and South Carolina.
