Major NC Landlord Reaches Deal in Rent Price-Fixing Case

One of North Carolina’s largest landlords has agreed to stop using rent-pricing software that state officials say drives up housing costs. Cortland Management, which owns at least eight properties in the Charlotte area, will no longer use RealPage, a platform the Attorney General says uses private data and artificial intelligence to inflate rents. According to WCCB, the company is the first of six landlords to settle a lawsuit filed earlier this year, accusing them of violating antitrust laws. As part of the settlement, Cortland will pay $100,000 for legal fees and consumer education. The company admitted no wrongdoing. Renters say more protections are needed.
