Limestone University announced Wednesday it is facing a critical financial crisis that could force it to shut down or move fully online. The Board of Trustees said the school needs $6 million in support to continue in-person operations. Without it, the campus will close after the spring semester, and staff will be laid off. According to WBTV, the university cites declining enrollment, rising costs, and long-standing financial pressures common to small private colleges. Founded in 1845 as South Carolina’s first women’s college, Limestone now enrolls over 1,600 students. The board will meet April 22 to determine the school’s future. Athletics and campus life would end.
