New Bill Could Pave Way for Billion-Dollar Casino in South Carolina

A new bill introduced in the South Carolina state legislature could pave the way for casinos in the state. The bill, first presented in the House of Representatives on March 6, has gained support from a bipartisan group of 17 lawmakers, with four additional sponsors added on April 8.
If passed, the bill would legalize casinos in select counties that meet specific criteria, such as falling into the lowest job tax credit tier and having I-95 running through them. Counties would need to request a casino license from the state. According to WBTV, one eligible area is Orangeburg County, home to the Town of Santee, where a $1 billion casino complex could be built, potentially generating an $8 billion economic impact over the next decade.
Currently, South Carolina law prohibits casinos, so the bill must be approved before any casino projects can move forward. As of April 9, the bill has been referred to the Ways and Means Committee but has not yet seen further action.
