Charlotte restaurant owners are closely monitoring President Donald Trump’s tariff decisions, as a 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, set to begin April 2nd, could drive up costs for local eateries. The tariff is expected to affect the prices of fruits, vegetables, and alcohol, which are essential imports. In 2023, the U.S. imported more than $45 billion worth of these items, according to WCCB. Jeff Tonidandel, owner of five Charlotte restaurants, including Haberdish, relies on imported goods such as limes and maple syrup. Tonidandel, who is preparing to open his sixth restaurant, Leluia Hall, in Dilworth, said even without the added tariffs, running a successful restaurant remains a challenging endeavor.
