A North Carolina man was arrested while attempting to board a flight overseas to join the Islamic State group, according to a federal complaint unsealed Tuesday. Alexander White, 29, of Durham, faces charges of attempting and conspiring to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, says WCCB.
White’s arrest on Dec. 4 followed a months-long investigation into his online activities, during which he allegedly sent pro-ISIS messages to various Facebook users, including an undercover FBI agent. Using the social media handle “Sulaiman Al-Amriki,” White posted extremist content between June and October 2024, including propaganda videos from ISIS.
According to federal prosecutors, White communicated with several individuals who claimed to be from the Middle East and North Africa, expressing his desire to join ISIS. He also discussed missed opportunities to travel for the group, including a 2018 trip to Egypt. The investigation included a staged video call that White believed was with an ISIS spokesperson.
